Summer will soon be upon us and we all know what this means – as soon as the blissful rays of sunshine begin to poke out between the clouds, we can’t resist rushing to our closets and shops to get our beautiful summer dresses out to show to the world… or as Warehouse shows us – we don’t even need to head to the wardrobe to get our summer styles on!

In their new ad campaign called ‘Dash for the Sun’, they show women walking around in thick warm clothes looking cold and fed up, but then suddenly…

Hey presto! The sun beams down and the women rush into its rays, do a star jump that anyone would be proud of and suddenly their winter clothes burst off of them to reveal them looking great in their summer clothes.

Wedding Tradition #1: Italy.

Italy holds on to a lot of different wedding traditions. From week-long celebrations to the groom having to serenade the bride from a balcony, Italians are known for their love of tradition, family and love. Did you know that it’s customary for couples to smash a vase at the wedding? The more pieces it breaks into, the more years of a happy marriage.

An Italian bride also needs to carry around a money purse, or la borsa, for all of her guests to contribute some cash. The money is to help out with the wedding expenses and/or the honeymoon! And every Italian wedding would need some “confetti”, also known as sugar-coated almonds, representing the bitter and sweet parts of life.

Wedding Tradition #2: Japan.

Have you ever heard of the Japanese betrothal ceremony? It’s when the bride and groom’s families get together and exchange gifts to one another. Some popular gifts include a folding fan which represents the future of growth and wealth or a long piece of white hemp that signifies a wish that the couple grow old and grey together.

There’s also something called a sake-sharing ceremony during a Shinto wedding. The couples and their parents will take sips of sake using three cups to symbolise the bond of their new family.

Wedding Tradition #3: Mexico.

Most Mexican brides wear white, but they may be hiding some colourful ribbons underneath their gowns. A yellow piece will symbolise the blessing of food, blue will bring good luck in wealth and red will represent the summoning of a passionate marriage. After the vows are made at the ceremony, traditionally, a priest will wrap a lazo, or a rosary, around the couple’s necks in a figure eight to show eternal union.

A mariachi band will play the lively, romantic tunes and the traditional wedding cake is made with nuts and fruits soaked in rum (sounds delicious doesn’t it?)!

Wedding Tradition #4: England.

Who invited the chimney sweep? The couple did of course! In addition to family, friends and loved ones, the bride and groom may invite a chimney sweep to their wedding. Two-hundred years ago, a London chimney sweep saved King George II’s life and then the king declared that all sweeps bring good luck.

It’s also English tradition for the bride to carry a horseshoe adorned with ribbons, for more good fortune in life and marriage, of course!

Wedding Tradition #5: India.

There are so many wonderful and vibrant Indian wedding traditions. But the one that makes them stand out among all the other cultures has to be the henna tattoo.

The night before the wedding is when the henna or “Mehndi” takes place. This is when the bride’s hands and feet are decorated with intricate, beautiful designs. On the right hand, the groom’s name is hidden and before he is allowed to sleep on his wedding night he has to find it!

In Greek tradition, brides should carry a lump of sugar in their glove to start their marriage off nice and sweet! She can also carry ivy to symbolise a never-ending love.

The traditional colour of a Chinese wedding is red, signifying love and joy. We may have already known that a Chinese bride dresses in colour on her wedding day, but did you know that the bride and groom’s homes are also decorated in red to celebrate too?

Wedding Tradition #8: Canada.

Have you ever been to a trousseau tea? One of the most beautiful Canadian traditions is hosted by the mother of the bride. She invites neighbours, friends and colleagues who aren’t on the guest lists over to admire all of the wonderful gifts the bride and groom has received for the wedding thus far (from the bridal shower, etc).

It’s great opportunity to let those that aren’t coming to the official celebration to offer congratulations and to give them a bit of time to partake in the pre-wedding fun. And then there’s a tradition known as the “Wedding Wheel,” where the guests line up in two lines at the reception and pay a dollar to dance with the bride and groom!

Wedding Tradition #9: France.

Canadians may have a trousseau tea party, but the word originated in France. A trousseau is a bride’s hope chest and represents all the wonderful things she’s waiting to use during married life.

The featured cake for a French wedding is the croquembouche, a tower of crème-filled pastries. The bride and groom will try to kiss over the cake and if the tower doesn’t fall it is said that they will have a lifetime of prosperity.

Wedding Tradition #10: Puerto Rico.

A Puerto Rican bride’s bouquet is traditionally made of amapolas and flamboyán flowers. These are beautiful, colourful flowers that are all over the island and add the perfect, tropical touch to the celebration.

Favours are also a must for a Puerto Rican wedding. Known as “capias,” with ribbons attached, the favours include the name of the newly-weds and the wedding date!

Wedding Tradition #11: USA.

Although the U.S. is known for its melting pot of culture and ethnicity, there is one tradition that stems from the sweet, southern people of America. The groom’s cake.

A cake made specifically for the handsome groom, it can be created to match his personality, created to be his favourite food or sports team and it’s always the complete opposite of the beautiful wedding cake! The bride keeps the secret until the big reveal at the reception.

Wedding Tradition #12: Germany.

An official inviter is a mark of a traditional German wedding. Someone gets dressed up and goes door to door to invite the happy couple’s guests to their wedding! If the guests accept, they’ll pin a ribbon to the inviter’s hat.

And instead of throwing a bouquet, the bride is blindfolded at the reception and must catch one of the bridesmaids dancing around her. The one she catches is said to be the next woman to marry!

Wedding Tradition #13: Jamaica.

Jamaican wedding cakes are a surprise to the bride! Covered in lace, fruit cakes are carried to the wedding by a procession of women. The reception and celebration takes place after the ceremony and is traditionally held at the groom’s family home.

It’s not the norm for a Swedish bride to be walked down the aisle by her father. Instead, she walks down with her groom!

There’s also a bit of unexpected “kissing” traditionally involved during a Swedish wedding day. If the bride or groom leave the room at any time during the celebration, then the guests may plant a huge kiss on one of the newly-weds!
